Car Tyres – Do You Know the Law?

Stay Safe and Road-Legal with National Vehicle Solutions

The Legal Minimum Tyre Tread Depth

In the UK, the legal minimum tread depth for car tyres is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre’s width, and around the entire circumference. Anything below that isn’t just unsafe, it’s illegal.

If you’re caught driving with tyres below the legal limit, you could face:

  • A fine of up to £2,500 per tyre

  • Three penalty points on your licence per tyre

That’s potentially £10,000 and 12 points if all four tyres fail the test.... ouch.

Why Tread Depth Matters

Tread depth affects how well your car grips the road, especially in wet conditions. As the tread wears down, your tyres can’t disperse water as effectively, increasing the risk of aquaplaning. You’ll also notice longer stopping distances and reduced control.

Quick Tip: Try the 20p test – place a 20p coin into the tread grooves. If you can see the outer rim, it’s time for a change.

Tyre Pressure – Don’t Ignore It

Under-inflated tyres wear faster, reduce fuel efficiency, and make your steering feel heavy. Over-inflated tyres cause uneven wear and reduce grip.

Check your tyre pressures at least once a month and before long journeys. You’ll find the correct PSI in your vehicle’s handbook or inside the fuel cap.

Tyre Condition – More Than Just Tread

Even if your tread depth is legal, your tyres can still be unsafe. Watch out for:

  • Cuts, bulges or cracks in the sidewall
  • Objects lodged in the tyre
  • Uneven wear, which could signal wheel alignment issues

If you spot any of these, get them checked by a professional immediately.
